Foot Care > Corns and CallusesQ. What are corns and calluses and how should they be treated? A. You can think of corns and calluses as your skin's way of protecting you. Hard layers of dead cells are produced when the skin is subjected to excessive pressure or friction - such as one toe rubbing against another or against a shoe. Unfortunately, the thicker the protective covering becomes the more pain or burning it may cause as it increases pressure on the living tissue underneath. NEVER cut corns or calluses. Wearing shoes that do not pinch and using cushions or moleskin can prevent the development of corns and calluses. Surgery may be necessary to correct pressure causing deformities. When foot problems occur, your feet deserve your full attention
and, when needed, the care of your podiatrist.
